How to build a photography portfolio: selection and sequence

Updated 21 October 2026 · 3 min read

In short

A photography portfolio works with series, not single photos: three to five series of six to twelve images each, strictly selected and in a deliberate sequence. Every series gets a short text about the brief or the idea, and the presentation shows the image large and undisturbed.

Series, not single images

A photographer is judged on the eye and on consistency. Twenty single good photos allow for luck; a series of eight images that belong together proves that you can sustain an idea. So build your portfolio out of series.

Three to five series is enough. Six to twelve images per series.

Selecting

The selection is the work. Rules that help:

  • Doubt means no. An image you doubt, you remove. What remains becomes stronger.

  • One idea per series. Images that do not belong to the idea go to another series or out.

  • No duplicates. Two nearly identical images: pick one.

  • Let someone else choose. A fellow student or teacher sees what you no longer see.

Sequence within a series

A series has a beginning, a middle and an end, like a story:

  1. Open with an image that sets the tone and makes people curious.

  2. Alternate: wide and detail, calm and movement, light and dark.

  3. Close with the image that lingers longest — often not the most spectacular one.

Text with a series

Short. Three to six sentences per series: what it is, where it was made, for whom (commission or personal work), which decision was decisive (light, location, technique). No description of what you can already see.

A longer story suits documentary series; use the structure from [How to write a case study](/en/guides/how-to-write-a-case-study) there.

Image size and quality

  • Supply images at least 2400 pixels on the long side; a portfolio tool makes smaller versions itself.

  • Keep the colour grading consistent within a series.

  • Compare your export on a phone and on a laptop; the image has to work on both.

Presentation online

With photography the site has to disappear. Choose a setting with lots of white or deep black, one calm typeface and no decoration. Images at full width, one at a time or in a calm grid.

In Folyra the Editorial engine (paper, an ultralight serif) is made for this: the image is large, the text stays small. See the example portfolio of [Noor Janssen](/en/examples/noor-janssen), a fictional photographer with series, books and posters.

What else you need

  • An about page with a real photo of you, three to five sentences and contact.

  • For commercial work: which clients, what kind of commissions you take.

  • An address you can put on a card.

Frequently asked questions

How many photos belong in a photography portfolio?
Three to five series of six to twelve images each, so roughly 25 to 50 photos in total. Better fewer and strictly chosen than many and mixed.
Should I organise my photos by subject or by series?
By series. A series shows that you can sustain an idea; an organisation by subject (portrait, landscape) quickly becomes a grab bag.
How much text goes with a photo series?
Three to six sentences: what, where, for whom and which decision was decisive. For documentary series it can be longer.
At what resolution do I upload my photos?
At least 2400 pixels on the long side. The portfolio tool makes smaller, fast versions for phones itself.
