How to make an online portfolio for free
Updated 21 October 2026 · 3 min read
In short
You can make an online portfolio for free in an afternoon, if you arrange three things first: three to six worked-out projects, a short about-me text and images at least 1600 pixels wide. Pick a tool that handles the structure for you, so your time goes into the content and not into an empty page.
What you need before you start
The tool is the easy part. The work is in what you put into it:
Three to six projects, each with brief, your role, process, result and reflection. See [How to make a portfolio as a student](/en/guides/portfolio-for-students).
An about-me text of three to five sentences.
Images that are cropped and sharp; 1600 pixels wide is a good minimum.
A name for your address. Usually your own name, without digits or dashes.
If you have these, a portfolio is online in an afternoon. If you do not, no tool will help.
What free tools usually leave out
Free is almost always free with a limit. When choosing, look at:
An advert or watermark on your site. Unwanted for a job application.
The address. name.tool.com is fine; tool.com/user/38213 is not.
A limit on projects or storage. Three to six projects have to fit.
Export. Can you take your work with you if you switch?
Mobile. Look at your own portfolio on a phone before you share it.
Website builder or portfolio platform?
A general website builder gives you a blank canvas and a thousand options. That sounds like freedom, but most portfolios built with it look alike and take days. A portfolio platform fixes the structure (project page, about, contact) and lets you choose within limits.
For a student the second is almost always better: you are a designer or maker, not a web developer, and your portfolio has to get finished.
How Folyra's free plan works
One portfolio site at yourname.folyra.nl.
Three published projects, each asked for step by step as a case study.
The Studio engine with your own colour and type choices.
250 MB of storage for images.
No adverts, no watermark, no credit card.
More projects, all three engines and AI text help come with the Student plan from € 2.99 a month. Your work stays yours and can always be exported.
Live in an afternoon: the plan
Create an account and choose your address.
Add your strongest project; answer the questions per step. Count on 20 to 30 minutes per project if your material is ready.
Repeat for your second and third project.
Fill in your profile: name, what you do, a photo, contact.
Choose a style: colour, type, rhythm. You see every choice straight away.
Publish. Open the link on your phone. Share it.
Afterwards
A portfolio is never finished. Set a reminder to add one project and remove one every quarter. That way your portfolio grows with you without ever starting from zero again.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a free portfolio good enough for a job application?
- Yes, if there is no advert or watermark on it, the address is clean and your projects are well worked out. The content counts, not the plan.
- Do I need my own domain name?
- No. An address like yourname.folyra.nl is clear and professional enough. A domain of your own is a neat upgrade for later, not a requirement.
- How long does it take to make an online portfolio?
- With three worked-out projects and images ready: an afternoon. Writing the case studies usually takes more time than building the site.
- Can I take my portfolio to another tool later?
- With Folyra, yes: you can always export your content and images. Check this with every free tool before you begin.

Folyra asks, per project, what a strong case study needs and builds the page while you type. Start free, no credit card.
